Growl Bass Designer

Design a dubstep growl bass live — drag the XY pad for wavetable morph and drive, then raise the LFO rate and hear a static bass turn into a Skrillex‑style growl. The movement of the timbre, not the note, is the whole sound. Copy the recipe into Serum, Vital or Massive.

SourceWavetable (or 2–3 detuned saws / FM). Start on a bright, harmonically rich frame.
MovementLFO → wavetable position (or filter cutoff). Tempo-sync it: 1/4 for a slow wob, 1/8–1/16 for a fast growl.
FormantComb or bandpass/formant filter for the vowel. Modulate it too for the “talking” motion.
DistortionWaveshaper / drive after the filter. Stack two gentle stages rather than one extreme one.
GlueMultiband / OTT to even it out, then a low-pass to tame fizz. Resample and repeat to taste.
Tempo140 BPM, half-time feel — the classic dubstep grid.

Free route: Vital (wavetable) + any distortion. Paid shortcuts: Serum, Massive, Phase Plant. The moving timbre matters more than the plugin.

Growl bass FAQ

What actually makes a dubstep growl?

A harmonically dense source, rhythmic movement of the timbre from an LFO or automation, and distortion — with a comb or formant filter carving the vowel. The movement is the part beginners miss: a static distorted bass is just a distorted bass. Raise the LFO here and you hear it become a growl.

What did Skrillex use for “Scary Monsters”?

In a 2011 MusicRadar interview he named Native Instruments Massive and FM8 as his two synths and said he leans on FM synthesis. The community technique uses a moving wavetable in Massive plus heavy distortion, but the exact preset was never officially published — so treat specific settings as a solid recreation, not a claim about the session.

Can I do this with free plugins?

Yes. Vital is a free wavetable synth that covers everything here. Any synth with an LFO you can route to wavetable position or filter cutoff, plus a distortion unit, will make a growl. Paid tools like Serum or Massive are shortcuts, not a secret ingredient.

Is the audio a sample?

No — it's a Web Audio synth generating the growl live in your browser: a wavetable oscillator through a waveshaper and an LFO-swept formant filter. Nothing is recorded, downloaded or uploaded.
