What makes a chiptune lead sound 8-bit?
A pulse (square) wave with an adjustable duty cycle, played under a strict voice budget. The pulse channel’s only tone control is that duty cycle, and cycling a chord’s notes on one voice very fast fakes harmony. Drag the pad here: right for a thinner, more nasal timbre, up until the arpeggio fuses into a chord.
Why only three timbres from four duty cycles?
The 2A03 offers 12.5%, 25%, 50% and 75%, but a 25% and a 75% pulse are mirror images that sound identical. That leaves three genuinely distinct timbres per channel: thin/nasal (12.5%), reedy (25%) and hollow square (50%).
How do you play a chord with one pulse channel?
You cycle the chord’s notes on that one channel extremely fast — a 1/16 to 1/64 arpeggio, often changing every frame — so the ear fuses them into one perceived chord. Raising the arp rate above shows the notes stop sounding separate.
